Key Biscayne
Miami, FL
Key Biscayne is located southeast of Miami in Biscayne Bay, six miles off the mainland via Rickenbacker Causeway . The Key is perhaps the wealthiest enclave of expensive homes in Florida, and features expansive harbor and beach views from the small (1.3 sq. mile) residential village.
The island features several attractive marinas, the Crandon park tennis, golf and beach complex which hosts the Lipton tennis tournament, the Royal Caribbean Golf Classic on the PGA Champions Tour, as well as the longest stretch of family-oriented beach in the county. The south end of the island forms a state park built around the historic Cape Florida lighthouse.
Residents typically work and shop on the mainland although there are real estate and service businesses on the island. The small village is bisected by Crandon Boulevard running north-south along the island — to the east are large condo towers, hotels, and a small selection of homes, while the west side is almost exclusively single-family homes, many with expansive harbor views. Rentals are expensive, while single family homes range from pricey to some of the most expensive single-family complexes in the state. Key Biscayne was the home of President Nixon's 'Winter White House' and the island remains popular with northern 'snowbirds' as well as wealthy South Americans.
The population of Key Biscayne is 10.057 with a median age of 40 (vs 35 for the US as a whole). 65% have a bachelor's degree or higher vs. 24% for the US as a whole. 50% are foreign born vs. 11% for the US as a whole, and 70% speak a language other than English at home vs. 18% for the US. The median commute time is 24 minutes, and the median household income is $86,599 vs. $41,994 for the US. 29% of housing units are renter-occupied. Single-family owner-occupied homes have a median value of $615,500 vs. $119,600 for the US. Median monthly owner costs are $3,233 (with mortgage) or $999 without a mortgage.
Median rent is $1,674. Residents primarily work in management and professional related occupations or are retired.
